Isle of Barra
Why is Barra a 'Near-by' ?
In the summer there are Wednesday sailings from Coll to Barra and Barra to Coll. This makes for an interesting diversion, a worthy contender if you're wishing to combine visits to both the inner and outer isles.
This option is far from obvious in Calmac's literature with many unaware of the passage. The sail into Castlebay's bay, if the weather's like in the picture above, is stunning. The crossing to Barra from Tiree passes through Gunna Sound (separates Tiree from Gunna/Coll) is equally impressive and an excellent place to see basking sharks, dolphins etc.....
All in all, a highly recommended alternative route with the advantage that you can experience the quietness of Coll before hitting the heady heights of the Outer Isles.
